Sometimes the best ideas don’t come from a recipe book. They come from a chef who refuses to stand still. That’s exactly what’s happening inside the kitchen at Ryan's Sports Pub, where New Bedford native Brenda Benique is constantly pushing herself to outdo whatever she made the week before.

“My brain is always working,” she said. “Every week, I try to top my specials.”

Well, one idea lead to another and the “Mozambique Bomb” was brought to life.

A Viral-Inspired Twist With a SouthCoast Soul

Benique took inspiration from those trending injectable stuffed bites and gave it a nice local spin.

Instead of mac and cheese or snack food fillings, she went with something every SouthCoast local knows and loves: chicken Mozambique.

Using pizza dough as the base, she created a stuffed dough ball filled with creamy chicken mozambique, then injected it with melty beer cheese to take it over the top.

“And it sold,” she said. “It sold really, really well.”

Built From Passion and Experience

Benique’s creativity is built on years of experience and a deep culinary background. She's a graduate of Johnson & Wales University and a former student at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School. This chef has been cooking professionally since 2008.

For the past four and a half years, Ryan’s has given her something every chef craves: freedom.

“What I love most is that I can be as creative as I want,” she said. “Every week I can create something new for customers.”

That freedom has turned the kitchen into a testing ground for bold ideas. From French onion-inspired pizza to loaded, sauce-heavy “cooking fries” that regulars keep asking to bring back.

Don’t Be Surprised If It Sells Out (Again)

While the "Mozambique Bomb" is currently off the menu, I'm here to tell you that it's making an epic return come Thursday, April 30 when Benique's weekly specials return to Ryan's.

Be warned, it’s a full-blown flavor explosion in your mouth waiting to happen.
