"We ride for those who have died" was the mantra heard loud and proud over Mother's Day Weekend.

The New Bedford Police Unity Cycling Team participated in the 2024 Police Unity Tour, continuing their tradition of raising awareness for law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. This dedicated cycling team includes officers from the New Bedford Police Department (NBPD) as well as officers from surrounding towns, all united by a common cause.

Every May, the team embarks on an emotional journey, starting with a drive to Florham Park, New Jersey. Over the next four days, team members pedal their bicycles 320 miles to Washington, D.C., averaging six to eight hours of riding each day. This rigorous journey culminates in the kickoff of National Police Week at the National Law Enforcement Memorial. The event includes a series of moving ceremonies, as well as an emotional candlelight vigil in the heart of Washington, D.C., honoring their fallen colleagues.

Guided by the motto, “We Ride For Those Who Died,” the NBPD's representation this year included three cyclists, two motorcycle riders, and three support team members. Among the cyclists was Patrol Officer Stephanie Connolly, who began her ride on Thursday, May 9th, and completed it on Sunday, May 12th.

“This past week has been an emotional rollercoaster, to say the least. I can't thank my new cycling family enough as also to our fallen heroes, thank you for your service and sacrifice,” said Connolly. “This is my first year riding, but I have attended the memorial every year to honor the fallen officers. This year, I decided to participate by riding to make it even more meaningful.”

Thousands of police officers, first responders, military personnel, and families of fallen officers gathered to support and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Connolly highlighted a particularly memorable experience: “One of the coolest parts was riding with Dara Gannon, the wife of fallen officer Sean Gannon.”

Connolly has a personal connection to this cause. She received the Gannon scholarship in November 2020, which covered her full tuition at the academy she attended in 2021. This year, with a few open spots on the team, she seized the opportunity to join the ride. “Everyone I rode with was so supportive the entire ride, and I would absolutely do the 320 miles again,” she said.

Connolly dedicated her ride to the memory of one of her best friends, Kourtny DeForitis, a Seekonk police officer who was tragically killed in a motorcycle crash on Route 103 in September 2023. “It’s the most heartfelt event I’ve ever been through. To be able to ride for the hard work these officers endure every single day, it’s breathtaking and inspirational,” she remarked.

The NBPD also rode in honor of other fallen officers, including Sergeants Sean Gannon (Yarmouth Police), Michael Chesna (Weymouth Police), and Mike Cassidy (New Bedford Police).

Reflecting on the experience, Connolly described the ride into the memorial: “Once you take the turn with thousands of people lined up, the motorcade, and after enduring four grueling days of heavy hills, long hours, and great mileage, your spirits are lifted by the support and camaraderie. That was the best part.”
