Mikayla Nogueira, the Apponequet High School graduate who grew into one of the most-followed beauty influencers in the world, recently shared a deeply personal moment with her millions of fans. It was a letter she wrote to herself a decade ago during her senior year at Apponequet..

The Assignment That Changed Everything

The letter was part of a high school English assignment led by teacher Harry DeMello, who, back in 2016, asked his students to write a letter to their future selves. Ten years later, true to his word, DeMello mailed each letter back. For Nogueira, who has attracted over 17 million TikTok followers and two billion likes on the platform, the timing couldn't have been more meaningful.  "I've been waiting for this letter for 10 years," she said. "I knew you wouldn't let us down Mr. DeMello."

What Did Mikayla Nogueira's Letter to Her Future Self Say?

In the letter, a teenage Mikayla expressed hopes that she would graduate college with a marketing degree, which she did, at Bryant University. She hoped she would find a kind partner, a beautiful home, and a life built around her passion for makeup.

The raw honesty of the letter caught her off guard, and she started to get emotional, even sobbing at times as she read the letter she wrote to herself a decade ago. "High school was not easy for you," she read aloud to her followers. "You experienced pain, pressure, joy and confusion all at the same time. However, you never let this bring you down."

From Apponequet High School to 17 Million TikTok Followers

The letter revealed a young woman already wrestling with profound self-awareness. She wrote openly about toxic relationships, estrangement from her brother, and a complicated dynamic with her parents. Perhaps the most striking line came near the end when she reminded herself of three very important values. "Remember, Mikayla, to be humble, gracious, and kind."

Gazelle, Michaela and I all agreed that none of us on the show had the deep insight she had at such a young age.

Why This TikTok Moment Resonated With Millions

What makes the letter so powerful isn't the predictions.  It is definitely the unfiltered honesty. At 17 or 18, most of us are too preoccupied with fitting in and worrying about what other people think to have that level of self-awareness.

What Would You Write to Your Future Self?

Her story is a good reminder to occasionally pause and take stock of where we are in our short lives. What would you have written to yourself ten years ago? Would you have predicted where you are now? Would you have been proud, surprised, or a little humbled? But here's the more important question. What would you write to yourself today, for the person you'll be a decade from now?
