Walrus & Captain to Close After Nearly Eight Years in Mattapoisett
MATTAPOISETT (WBSM) — After nearly eight years, a Mattapoisett restaurant is closing its doors, but a new one will soon take its place.
Walrus & Captain, located in The Ropewalk on Route 6, announced this morning that it will close its doors on February 28.
Owner Kate Sudofsky posted a heartfelt message to the restaurant’s Facebook page, saying “the time has come for a shift.”
A Personal Journey From Music to Restaurant Ownership
“If you had told me years ago that after earning my master’s in violin performance, playing professionally in Philadelphia, and raising five kids in Marion, our family would end up opening and running a restaurant – with absolutely no experience – I never would have believed you,” she wrote. “It wasn’t the path I expected, but it has been one of the most incredible journeys of my life.”
Sudofsky and her husband Mike opened Walrus & Captain in 2018 as a bistro-style restaurant with “everything on the menu all the time,” meant to offer an alternative to some of the standard fare found in other area eateries.

What’s Next for the Route 6 Location
Even though Walrus & Captain is closing, Mattapoisett will soon have a new dining option moving into its place, and Sudofsky is sticking around.
“While this chapter is coming to a close, the story is not over,” she wrote. “The space is leased, and I’m happy to share that it will continue on as a restaurant with a passionate new owner. Renovations will begin right away, and I’ll still be involved. I’m truly excited about what’s ahead and will share updates as they unfold.”
The Sudofsky Family’s Future Plans
“This moment is bittersweet, but change can be a beautiful thing. Our family is looking forward to new adventures, and to welcoming a little more grace and ease into our lives,” she wrote.
