Britannica defines a mermaid as "a fabled marine creature with the head and upper body of a human being and the tail of a fish."

Britannica.com says, "In European folklore, mermaids (sometimes called sirens) and mermen were natural beings who, like fairies, had magical and prophetic powers"

According to legend, mermaids "though very long-lived, they were mortal and had no souls." Mermaids were said to love music and often sang. Some mermaids assumed human form and married men.

Walt Disney Pictures released the animated film The Little Mermaid in 1989, which told the tale (or tail) of teenage mermaid princess Ariel. The film and the character Ariel became Disney classics.

The Little Mermaid was based on the 1837 Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Anderson but with the Disney treatment.

Since Disney's Ariel hit the screen in 1989, little girls everywhere have dreamed of being mermaids – or at least of being a Disney princess like Ariel.
