Massachusetts’ Academy Award and Golden Globe Winners
Awards season is upon us, a time where celebrities dress to the nines to walk the red carpet and hope to take home some iconic Hollywood hardware.
The season kicks off with the Golden Globes in January, followed by the Critics' Choice Awards, SAG Awards, BAFTA Awards and finally the Academy Awards in March.
The Golden Globes began in 1944, established by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The awards were handed out at the Ambassador Hotel and was only attended by 30 people.
It wasn't until 1951 that they added television categories into the mix. The attendance has certainly grown from double digits to about 1,000 just last year when actors, producers and more from TV and movies gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
The first Academy Awards took place at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in 1929. Roughly 270 people were in attendance for what was a private ceremony, no broadcast. Only 12 awards were handed out that evening.
Now, things have changed.
The show is broadcast and last typically three-plus hours to accommodate the now 23 categories. The number of guests in attendance has increased as well. The Dolby Theater has a seating capacity of 3,400, so the awards ceremony is packed.
