
Oscar Nominees With Connections to Massachusetts and Rhode Island
The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were announced this morning.
Bowen Yang from Wicked and Rachel Sennott from Bottoms read the nominees from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Emilia Perez, a 2024 Spanish-language musical crime film, leads in nominations with 13. The film stars Karla Sofia Gascon and Zoe Saldana (both nominated) and focuses around a Mexican cartel leader who seeks the help of a lawyer to "disappear" by transitioning into a woman.

Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are among the competition for Gascon and Saldana. Grande is nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Erivo for Best Actress.
Ralph Fiennes' role in Conclave has earned him an Oscar nod as well as Kieran Culkin in A Real Pain.

The Academy will hand out its awards on March 2 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, but celebration is in order now for these local nominees:
A Complete Unknown features an iconic moment in music history when Bob Dylan took the stage at the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island. Some of the movie was filmed in the Ocean State.
Edward Norton, nominated for Best Supporting Actor in A Complete Unknown, hails from Boston, MA.
Ethan Herissa grew up in Massachusetts and stars in Nickle Boys, which is nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay
Inside Out 2 is nominated for Best Animated Feature. The cast providing the voices of the animated characters includes Amy Poehler, a Newton native, and Ayo Edebiri from Dorchester.
