History of the "Ladder Push"

On Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Fire Station One, located at 50 Spring Street in Marion, will host its Ladder Push-In Ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m.

A "ladder push-in" is a traditional way to welcome a new truck into the department as the firefighters push the vehicle into the station.

The tradition dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries when horse-drawn fire engines were pushed back into the station by firefighters. The horses couldn't reverse.

Joseph Aguilera, a five-year-old New Bedford boy with spina bifida, was WBSM's Mini Miracle for 2022. When we asked Joseph what he wants to be when he grows up, he said he wanted to be a New Bedford Police officer. When the police found out Joseph wants to join their ranks someday, he was invited to tour the South End Public Safety Center and visit the police, fire and animal control departments.
