Judge in Jasiel Correia Hearing Recuses Herself
BOSTON — A hearing scheduled for Thursday in Jasiel Correia II's fraud case has been postponed after the presiding judge suddenly recused herself.
The Herald News reports that U.S. Magistrate Judge M. Page Kelly filed notice Thursday morning that she was recusing herself from the case involving the Fall River mayor. The notice was filed under section 455 of the judiciary and judicial guidelines, but no specific reason was given for the filing.
Court records also show that a notice to cancel Thursday's hearing was also filed along with record of the case being reassigned.
Correia, who is charged with 13 counts of wire and tax fraud, was expected to have his case continued in federal court in Boston Thursday before Judge Kelly filed the notice of recusal.
Earlier this week, Correia's lead defense attorney, Mike Berthiaume, also filed a notice with the court that he was resigning from the case. Correia remains represented by Attorney Kevin Reddington.
