Horse Rescued From Mud In Westport Had To Be Put Down
Sadly hours after being rescued from a swamp in Westport last night, a 17-year-old horse had to be euthanized.
NBC 10 reports that the veterinarian called to the scene had to put the horse down due to hypothermia.
The horse, named Major, had been stuck in the mud at Morton Farm for hours on Thursday night after accidentally being let out of its stall.
Though Major was finally freed from the mud around 7:30 p.m., he was reportedly never able to warm up and was ultimately euthanized because of complications with hypothermia.
NBC 10 reports that this same horse had gotten stuck in a rocky area of the farm just two weeks ago and had to be rescued by the Westport Fire Department that time as well.
There was no word as to whether a barn inspection had been done at Morton Farm recently, but the chair of the Westport Board of Health, Dr. John Colletti, told NBC 10 that they've "had issues with this farm previously."
The family that owns Morton Farm is dealing with a duel loss this week. Their grandson was 24-year-old Christopher Morton of Tiverton who died in a motorcycle accident in Westport on Wednesday.
