Westport Kids Deliver Heartwarming Tribute to America’s 250th
When it comes to celebrating America's 250th birthday, it's hard to imagine a cuter tribute than the one put together by the students at Westport's Macomber Elementary School.
On Wednesday, May 27, a group of Macomber students took the stage to perform an original play celebrating America's upcoming semi-quincentennial, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. What began as a simple brainstorming session quickly transformed into a memorable production filled with costumes, songs, and history lessons.
The performance was the school's first time participating in Westport's ongoing America 250 efforts, led by the town's Westport MA 250 Committee. Rather than assigning a specific project, committee members and beloved Jane Dufault encouraged local groups to find their own creative ways to celebrate, and Macomber's staff and students ran with the idea.
A History Lesson Comes to Life
According to Macomber teachers Allison Correia, Jennifer Medeiros and Michelle Thomas, the school partnered with its PTO to create the play as an after-school program. Fifteen students participated in one-hour rehearsals over six weeks, learning about America's founding, the Declaration of Independence, early presidents, Betsy Ross and the meaning behind the nation's 250th anniversary.
The project also reached far beyond the cast itself. More than 120 Macomber students learned about the semi-quincentennial and the country's history through the process, helping turn a history lesson into something interactive and memorable.
Happy Tears and Proud Parents
Students performed the 30-minute production twice, first during a morning assembly for their classmates and later that afternoon for parents and family members. Dressed in adorable costumes, the young performers delivered lines, sang songs and brought America's story to life on stage.
By the time the curtain closed, the audience reaction said it all. Correia said parents were moved to tears as they watched the students confidently perform after weeks of hard work and preparation.

The production was made possible through a true community effort, with support from families, the Macomber PTO and Westport MA 250 Committee member Jane Dufault. For everyone involved, it was a reminder that learning history can be meaningful, educational and, in this case, absolutely adorable.
