Based on new stats from the Federal Highway Administration, all 50 states in America along with the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have been ranked when it comes to the most dangerous to drive in. On the list of 52, Puerto Rico was listed as the most dangerous, with South Carolina a close second.

The good news for us in the msn.com published ranking, Rhode Island is number 51, and Massachusetts is last at number 52. That means the odds of being involved in a fatal accident while driving here are the lowest in the nation.

Last year, more than 40,000 people lost their lives due to traffic accidents here in the U.S. Only 389 of those fatalities happened on Massachusetts roads, Rhode Island had 51 fatalities (rankings are based on population of each state).

As far as other New England states, Vermont is ranked at number 46, Connecticut is 41st, New Hampshire is 37th, and Maine is ranked at number 32 on the most dangerous states to drive in list. So, despite winters with snow and ice on the roads, New England is a relativily safe place to be driving. This can also be a factor in keeping the cost of car insurance more reasonable in these states than most others.
