Fall River Mosquitoes Found to Have West Nile Virus
Less than a week after West Nile Virus was detected in mosquitoes in another SouthCoast community, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health on Wednesday announced that the virus had been detected in mosquitoes collected in Fall River.
It was not revealed where in the city the sample had been collected.
On Saturday, it was announced that a mosquito sample containing West Nile Virus was collected in Wareham.
There have already been three known cases of human infections in Massachusetts so far this year, all in Suffolk County. On Tuesday, the Massachusetts Department of Health announced that a male in his 20s had been infected with the virus.
On September 2, the Mass DPH announced the second human case of West Nile Virus found in the state so far this year, a male in his 70s exposed to the virus “in Suffolk County in an area already known to be at moderate risk,” the DPH stated.
Back on August 25, the first human case of the year was discovered, with the individual affected “a female in her 70s who was exposed to the virus in Suffolk County,” according to the DPH.
There were 11 cases of human infection with West Nile Virus in Massachusetts in 2021, the DPH said.
