FALL RIVER (WBSM) — Fall River will always be known across the SouthCoast and beyond for the chilling story of Lizzie Borden.

With the recent anniversary of the infamous 1892 murders of Andrew and Abby Borden, the city continues to keep those murders alive with new additions.

The 19th century home where Lizzie and her family once lived became more known as where the ax murders of her stepmother and father took place. Since then, the house has become a museum and an overnight experience.

Next door to the Lizzie Borden House, Miss Lizzie's Coffee opened in August of 2023, also paying homage to the famous story with sweet treats, coffee and a whole lot of spookiness.

A new street sign has recently popped up outside the famous location, along with a creepy gargoyle currently sitting on the roof of the cafe.

If you are a frequent visitor of the Lizzie Borden House, you might have noticed the sign on Second Street in front of the courthouse and across the street from the bed and breakfast.

Like any other street, the fluorescent sign features the classic walking stick person cautioning drivers of pedestrians. The only difference is that this particular figure is wearing a dress while holding an ax.

For the most part, people who have chimed in on social media seemed to love the new signage. However, there is still some controversy on whether or not Lizzie committed the murders. Since she was acquitted during her trial, there are some opinions on whether it is fair for the city to have this sign.

On the other hand, the gargoyle on top of the cafe is just as creepy as everything else on Lizzie Borden's former street.

Like the Lizzie Borden House, Miss Lizzie's Coffee also has its own resident ghosts. It's where Liza Borden killed two of her children and herself in 1848.

Is the new gargoyle there to ward off the haunting spirits that roam the street as well as the ones inside the cafe?

Olivia Pereira, the owner's daughter, told WBSM that there's no meaning behind it other than it adding to everything else that's spooky there.

"My dad got the gargoyle from Home Depot," she said. "He likes to buy big pieces like that to add to the cafe every year."
