The anticipation is building as the South Coast prepares for the Decades of Dreams outdoor music festival, set to light up Fall River on September 21.
This highly anticipated event, presented by Freestyle Madness, is preparing an unforgettable night of music, nostalgia and celebration With a star-studded lineup featuring iconic artists such as Samantha Fox, Frankie J, Shannon, Safire, Lucas Prata, J.J. Fad, Tony Moran, Reina, John Minnis, Tonasia, George Anthony and the legendary Rockell, this festival is poised to be the event of the year.
The Return of a Freestyle Legend
Among the impressive roster of artists, one name stands out: Rockell, the voice behind the '90s smash hit "In A Dream."
We caught up with the legendary artist to discuss her excitement for the upcoming show, her love for Fall River and what it’s like being back on stage.
Rockell, synonymous with the freestyle movement of the '90s, said she is thrilled to join such a remarkable lineup.
"This concert is going to be epic," she said. "I can't wait to join such incredible people on stage. For freestyle fans, this is a one-stop shop to relive the nostalgia and just live your best life."
Having performed in Fall River earlier this year, Rockell has developed a deep appreciation for the city.
"I recently shot my video here, and I was blown away by the beauty of the downtown area — the graffiti, the bridges, it's just stunning," she said. "The love and support from the fans here is like no other."
The Evolution of Freestyle
The music industry has evolved significantly since the '90s, and Rockell has experienced these changes firsthand.
"Touring now, there's a bit more pressure," she said. "The younger generation is coming up, and while I'm proud to be 47, it definitely keeps me on my toes."
She noted the broader acceptance of different music genres today, which has expanded opportunities for artists.
"I love that you can cross over now — genres like country and rock have become mainstream. It's an exciting time to be an artist."
Despite the changes, Rockell remains passionate about her craft.
"I still love to sing, and I'm excited about being back on the road and recording more music. It's every artist's dream to do what they love, and I’m living that dream."
A Surreal Journey
Rockell's rise to fame was unexpected, even for her.
"I never wanted to be a singer," she said. "I actually wanted to be an attorney, but life had other plans."
At 17, she recorded "In A Dream," which quickly became a smash hit.
"Hearing my song on the radio for the first time was surreal," she said. "I called everyone I knew — I was freaking out. Even now, it still takes me by surprise that I get to do this for a living."
Fall River: The Heart of Freestyle
Freestyle music has a special place in the hearts of SouthCoast residents, and Rockell is amazed by the genre’s enduring popularity.
"It's incredible how big freestyle is here, especially in such a small community," she said. "Fall River has taken it to a whole new level with the love and generational support. It’s a place where this lineup has to be."
Rockell also revealed a personal connection to the city.
"I just found out I'm Portuguese, which was a surprise. So now, I’m diving into Portuguese cuisine, trying out recipes and loving the food here."
What to Expect at Decades of Dreams
As excitement builds for the Decades of Dreams festival, Rockell is looking forward to seeing all the artists perform.
"I've shared the stage with many of them before, and I can't wait to see everyone, from Raina to Frankie J," she said.
When asked about potential on-stage collaborations, Rockell remained coy.
"A girl never tells her secrets — you'll have to come and see for yourself."
