The MGM Show decided to kick off Restaurant Week at a place neither of us had tried before, and Mama Mia, was it good.

Fairhaven’s latest eatery and former VFW, Sail House Tavern, has been buzzing since opening earlier this year, and after stopping in Monday morning, we quickly figured out why. Great food, friendly staff and a pizza so thin it practically defies physics.

Now, I don’t throw the word “thin” around lightly when it comes to food, but I’m officially dubbing it the thinnest pizza on the SouthCoast.

A Pizza Crust That’s Practically See-Through

When it comes to pizza, I usually lean toward bar-style over anything else. I’ll mix in a New York slice here and there, but my heart has always belonged to a good thin crust.

At Sail House Tavern, you actually get two choices when ordering pizza: thin-crust (bar-style) or their ultra-thin crust, which is designed to be more of a shareable appetizer.

When owners Howie, Linda and Alex brought the pizza over to the table, we all stared at it for a second. The crust was so thin it almost didn’t look real. “Ultra-thin” wasn’t marketing hype. It was the truth.

The Idea Behind the Ultra-Thin Slice

The concept came from co-owner Matt Gamache and Chef Rui, who wanted to create a from-scratch pizza that was so thin you could almost see through it.

Think of it as the perfect light bite to carry you through a long night without feeling like you just swallowed a bowling ball.

We tried the linguiça pizza, and let me tell you, it absolutely delivered. Plenty of flavor, just the right amount of crisp, and light enough that you don’t feel stuffed afterward.

If you find yourself in Fairhaven, it’s definitely worth stopping in. It’s the kind of pizza that hits the spot without the bloat – just enough to satisfy the craving.

The Best of South Shore Bar Pizza

There's pizza, and then there's South Shore Bar Pizza. Birthed in Brockton (and to this writer, perfected in Randolph – Lynwood Café is the true G.O.A.T.), it must meet certain qualifications to be considered "SSBP," which include: it's a 10-inch pie; it has a thin, cracker-like crust with minimal "flop;" the cheese is a blend that features more cheddar than mozzarella; and bonus points if you take it home between two carboard-type plates wrapped in flat brown paper bag. They also usually come with "laced" or "burnt" edges (terminology depends on where you are ordering), which is when the sauce and cheese are extended all the way to the edge of the pan, creating a crispy, flavorful coating to the crust. We reached out to the hugely popular South Shore Bar Pizza Social Club Facebook group to ask the experts to share the best of the best (in no particular order).
