The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a class to people who want to learn about boating. The 12-week course is taught by experienced Coast Guard Auxiliary teachers with years of experience on local waters.

This would be the perfect introduction to recreational boating fundamentals, boating terminology, boat equipment and handling, boat trailering, lake boating, rules of the road, navigation, medical and safety awareness, weather, engines, radios, how to reach a nautical chart, buy a boat, tie a knot, handle emergencies and call in a mayday.

The course is open to anyone ages 12 and up. The cost is $55, which includes a book and chart. The boating license that would be obtained for a 12- to 17-year-old is slightly different than one for 18 and up.

The course will take place over 12 Monday evenings Feb. 6 to April 24, 7 to 9 p.m., at the auxiliary on Middle Street in Fairhaven.

Beginner and expert boaters, sailors, fishermen and hunters would all benefit from the course, regardless of skill and experience.

"We believe that taking a boating skills and seamanship course can saves lives on the water. Lives of the captain, skipper, crew, family, friends, pets, and visitors onboard," the auxiliary's Rona Trachtenberg said. "This is the perfect time for the novice and experienced boater to learn or review boating safety fundamentals, right before boating season begins."

Class registration is available here.
