July marks the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark civil rights law designed to ensure equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities. This month serves as a time to honor the inherent and inalienable rights of people with disabilities, promote their visibility, and celebrate their numerous achievements.

The Fairhaven Commission on Disability, in collaboration with M.O. L.I.F.E., Inc., is hosting a Diverse Abilities Celebration to commemorate this significant milestone. This event aims to reaffirm their commitment to supporting the rights of individuals with disabilities and to celebrate the art, advocacy, and resilience of the vibrant SouthCoast community.

While the passage of the ADA opened doors of opportunity for people with disabilities, there is still work to be done to fully realize its promise. Despite the progress made, challenges remain in ensuring that all individuals with disabilities have equal access to opportunities and resources. The Fairhaven Commission on Disability and M.O. L.I.F.E., Inc. are dedicated to continuing this important work and advocating for disability rights, emphasizing the importance of community support and inclusion.

The Diverse Abilities Celebration, now in its second year, will take place on July 28th from 11;00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Fairhaven Council on Aging and REC Center. This rain-or-shine event will feature a variety of activities designed to engage and entertain attendees of all ages and abilities. Highlights of the celebration include a talent show showcasing the diverse talents of the community, various vendors offering unique products and services, resources providing valuable information and support, health and wellness activities promoting overall well-being, and a selection of delicious food to enjoy.

This celebration is not just an event but a powerful reminder of the importance of disability rights and the ongoing efforts to advocate for these rights. It is an inclusive celebration, welcoming all abilities and all ages, and providing an opportunity for the community to come together in support of individuals with disabilities.
