M.O.L.I.F.E. Seeks to Improve Lives of Adults with Disabilities [TOWNSQUARE SUNDAY]
The Fairhaven-based nonprofit M.O.L.I.F.E. works with intellectually and physically challenged adults to enhance their lives in areas such as career development, housing, and community inclusion.
I spoke this week with M.O.L.I.F.E. founder Charles Murphy and Chief Operating Officer Ivan Brito about the organization and its 27th Annual Gala, a fundraiser scheduled for October 21 at the Century House in Acushnet.
Murphy has been around people with disabilities for most of his life. His father developed a seizure disorder after a fall when Murphy was a young child.
"I went to college and part of my Masters theme was to develop M.O.L.I.F.E., an organization to support people with disabilities," Murphy said. "I want people with disabilities to be seen as individuals with great abilities."
Brito said those attending M.O.L.I.F.E. are involved with both inside and outside activities, whether its volunteering at the Buttonwood Park Zoo or visiting a local gym, or inside their Lambeth Park Drive headquarters, providing instruction on handling money, games, and arts and crafts.
M.O.L.I.F.E. also operates two group homes in the region, plus a food pantry in downtown New Bedford.
One of the group's major fundraisers is its annual gala. Murphy said proceeds from that event are badly needed.
"The gala helps fund our food pantry, and helps us provide a scholarship every year to graduating seniors, and for client services to help pay for trips to see the Providence Bruins or the Boston Science Museum," Murphy said.
You can purchase tickets on the M.O.L.I.F.E. website or stopping by the office at 4 Lambeth Park Drive in Fairhaven. The complete interview with Murphy and Brito can be heard here:
