There are many places to learn about New Bedford's historic whaling industry; most prominent is the New Bedford Whaling Museum. However, there are still people within our midst with stories to share about the industry, handed down by family members.

Many of them are members of the Descendants of Whaling Masters Inc., an organization established in 1974.

The organization now has more than 400 members, some living locally and others around the country.

Some will return to New Bedford on July 17 for the group's annual meeting at the Wamsutta Club and the public is welcome. Tickets are $30, and anyone wishing to attend must contact William Potter at (508) 994-0961 by Saturday, July 10.

Descendants of Whaling Masters President William King spoke with Townsquare Sunday this week about the organization and its mission, and shared some stories about his family members who worked in the whaling industry. His interview can be heard here:
