From Soft Socks to Downward Dog

Owner Shirley Lanouette started with three alpacas in 2006 with intentions to make and sell products using their fleece (the fluffy fur they're covered in).

"Their fleece is probably the best, as far as I'm concerned," Lanouette said. "Alpaca is hypoallergenic and it wicks moisture away from the skin."

The herd grew and so did the events, including alpaca yoga.

Interested in trying it yourself? Here are five things you should know before attending your first alpaca yoga class.

1. Don't Be Afraid of the Herd

The herd has a gentle nature and they really adore people.

"We've been doing this for a while and every weekend we have meet and greets, so they're used to it," Lanouette said.

2. Bring Your Own Yoga Mat/Towel

Though the yoga is performed in the field, you'll most likely want your own mat to make your time more comfortable.

3. You Get To Feed the Alpacas

"We give everyone a little cup of hay. It's nothing elaborate, but the alpacas know everybody has these and they'll come wandering around to your blanket waiting for you to give them some," Lanouette said.

4. Call Ahead

You don't need to make a reservation or purchase tickets in advance, but it's recommended that you call ahead to let Lanouette and the team at Hill Crest Alpacas know how many yogis to expect.

"We have a fairly big field. We let about 12 female alpacas out with the class," she said.

5. Leave With Less Stress and a Sweet Treat

After the class, your attitude will change for the better and your stress will diminish.

"For me, they're a godsend," Lanouette said. "They're so stress-free, their demeanor is so relaxing."

The cherry on top? Ice cream. Life is all about balance, right? Purchase a post-yoga scoop (or two) from Lanouette's daughter. She has an ice cream cart on premises.

Meet the Animals of Dartmouth's Don't Forget Us, Pet Us Sanctuary

Just off Faunce Corner Road in Dartmouth is an animal sanctuary for livestock that has become home to over 50 animals is just five short years. Whether they arrived because their owners could no longer care for them or they were removed from an abusive situation, Deborah Devlin and Jill Tagino, who run Don't Forget Us, Pet Us sanctuary, take in animals with no where else to go. Clearly, the livestock they care for are very happy to have found a home for the rest of their natural lives.

Thanks to artificial intelligence and advances in 3D mapping, Google Maps is slowly rolling out a new feature called immersive view, allowing users to go inside buildings. It looks like Dartmouth Mall is one of the first places in the area to use the new technology, thanks to images from 2017.
