They're a staple New England food, but not many people may know that fried clams are the brainchild of Essex, MA couple Chubby and Bessie Woodman. Long, fried story short, business was slow and Chubby decided to fry some clams, well, just because. After a few test batches, the couple found a recipe that tasted great, and they passed them out at the Essex Fourth of July parade the next day. Fast forward all these years, and fried clams have become standard SouthCoast fare.
Celebrate the birth of Bessie and Chubby's fried-baby and buy a boat of clams on the way home from the beach. Your belly will thank you!
