It's possible that several parishes in New Bedford, Fall River and Taunton may be closed or merged in the future. That's the word from Bishop Edgar da Cunha of the Catholic Diocese of Fall River.

The bishop told the heraldnews.com that major changes are coming and that all 82 churches in the diocese will be analyzed. He added that some will likely be recommended for closing or merging with other parishes.

Da Cunha said that declining Mass attendance and crumbling facilities will make the changes necessary. He added that many of the suburban parishes are doing well while some of the older churches in the cities are struggling. .
