Today marks the final day candidates hoping to run for mayor in Attleboro's special election can submit their nomination papers and sadly Spooky the Cat will not be on the ballot.

Yes, a cat made an attempt to run for mayor and replace Paul Heroux, who is now the Bristol County Sheriff.

But Spooky has been denied.

In what I'm sure was a joke/marketing ploy, the owner of Spooky Games in Attleboro brought its mascot, Mr. Spooky, to town hall last week to pull papers for a mayoral run.

Although his appearance in the building made for a delightful photo op, it turns out Mr. Spooky cannot be mayor of Attleboro.

Not because he was in the pockets of "Big Litter" or had a little problem with the catnip. No, Mr. Spooky is not able to run simply because he's not a registered voter.

If you want to run for mayor, you yourself must be able to vote. Makes total sense.

Bummer for Mr. Spooky, who clearly put on his best tie for the occasion only to be denied the job of his dreams.

I do however love that the election commission had so much fun with this idea and the city played along with it, too.

Mr. Spooky off the ballot is probably good news for the other real candidates, too. I mean, who could compete with this face?

By next week all of the potential candidates for mayor should be announced and the first debate among those candidates is Jan. 11 at the Attleboro High School auditorium.
