I think we can all agree that garbage-free water is the best kind of water.

While most of us just talk about it, there is a group of women doing something about it.

They call themselves the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage and they have made it their mission to keep the freshwater ponds of Cape Cod free of trash.

You won’t believe the amount of cleaning they have done so far.

Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage

The Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage (OLAUWG) have been cleaning up ponds on Cape Cod from Falmouth to Chatham for the past seven years.

“Gathering small teams of swimmers, ages 64 to 85, we sweep along the shallows, diving down to pick up beer cans, golf balls, fishing lures, waterlogged dog toys, hats, jackets, shoes, and occasionally a tire, cell phone or box of spent fireworks,” said OLAUWG online.

OLAUWG aims to keep the ponds clean and the marine life safe, but the organization has also been a way to prove that age is just a number.

“We swim to remove trash from ponds, channeling the strength of older women and challenging others to see beyond limits to take concrete action to preserve the environment,” said OLAUWG.

According to the “old ladies”, the most common kinds of litter found are golf balls, fishing lures, beer cans, nips, fishing line, and sand toys.

Since 2017, OLAUWG has collected its fair share of golf balls, but more importantly, these women have kept Cape Cod ponds beautiful.

The next time you take a dip off the Cape, tip your cap to the old ladies.

Thanks to them, our ponds and marine life are a whole lot happier.
