SAO MIGUEL (WBSM) — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck the Azores earlier today.

According to the USGS earthquake tracker, the quake struck at 7:14 a.m. local time (8:14 a.m. Lisbon time) with an epicenter about 26 kilometers southeast of Povoação, Portugal.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) marked it as 25 kilometers south-southeast of Faial da Terra on the island of Sao Miguel.

The earthquake struck on the anniversary of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan and caused the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
