There is nothing quite like experiencing an earthquake. It can be as small as an interesting bucket list moment or as devastating as a major quake that causes destruction and loss of life.

While there is no mistaking a big earthquake, a lot of people mistake a smaller or moderate size quake for a big truck going by, a dumpster being dropped back to the ground, or even an explosion.

What Did the Mattapoisett Earthquake Feel Like?

Mattapoisett was rocking and rolling on Wednesday night. According to the United States Geological Survey, a small earthquake hit the SouthCoast town at about 9 p.m. on January 7, and Facebook quickly filled with posts and comments from residents wondering about the source of the explosion.

The questions centered on the area of Mattapoisett Village and the Mattapoisett Mobil station in particular. Many other Mattapoisett residents reported they did not feel a thing or slept right through the small 1.8 magnitude earthquake.

Recent Earthquakes Felt on the SouthCoast

A number of earthquakes have been felt in recent years here on the SouthCoast, including a notable 4.0 magnitude quake. That one hit just after 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, November 8, 2020. The epicenter was off the shores of South Dartmouth, about nine miles south southwest of Bliss Corner, in the waters of Buzzards Bay.

Interestingly enough, there was another earthquake not far from the SouthCoast yesterday. This one happened earlier in the day, around 5 36 p.m., when a quake centered in Connecticut was felt. The epicenter was in Moodus, Connecticut, and it measured 1.9.
