NEW BEDFORD (1420 WBSM) — A man wanted in connection with a historic drug bust in New Bedford last month has been captured in New Orleans.

According to New Bedford Police, Amado Delgado Mendez, 30, was located in New Orleans as he attempted to de-board a train. Amtrak police and U.S. Marshals were able to take him into custody.

Mendez was wanted on drug trafficking charges connected to the historic October 24 seizure at 197 Cottage Street in New Bedford of 830 grams of fentanyl, 28 grams of cocaine and nearly $1.3 million in cash.

At that time, Vinicio Marrero Arias, 38, was arrested. Police said he and Mendez, both of whom lived at that address, were suspected of running the drug dealing operation.

A warrant was issued for Mendez as a result of the seizure, and he was found following a week-long manhunt. New Bedford Police said he was using an alias of Yohenry Conteras-Lara, which they learned of from law enforcement officers in the Dominican Republic.

According to police, Mendez was in possession of $13,000 in cash at the time of his arrest.

He will be transported back to Massachusetts for arraignment.

“This is a great example of what can be accomplished when multiple agencies work
together to bring a fugitive to justice. When that happens, law enforcement officers have a
reach that is too far and too wide for criminals to escape,” New Bedford Police Chief Paul Oliveira said. “I’m very grateful to all of the departments who were involved in this search and apprehension.”
