What Makes New Bedford Different

I didn’t grow up on the SouthCoast, but as someone who has lived here for virtually my entire adult life, and having a job here with Fun 107, I know what it means to be from New Bedford. The city truly is unlike any other in Massachusetts.

How It Compares to Other Massachusetts Cities

New Bedford is much different from Worcester and Springfield. It’s clearly very different from Boston. With the mills in Lawrence and Lowell, some people might think those cities are similar to New Bedford, but they are not. They are culturally very different.

What About Fall River?

One might wonder about Fall River. New Bedford and Fall River are both, obviously, the largest cities on the SouthCoast. They are both predominantly Portuguese, and they both feature endless choices for Portuguese restaurants, bakeries, and food. They could almost be considered twin cities.

The Subtle Differences Locals Know

However, anyone who lives in either New Bedford or Fall River knows the two cities have some pretty distinct differences, some subtle and others more noticeable. Putting aside the obvious rivalry, the city governments operate differently, and sometimes even the same Portuguese names are pronounced differently in New Bedford than in Fall River.
