Critics of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey have been calling her MIA when it comes to her connection to the SouthCoast. Healey's lack of presence on the SouthCoast came up again yesterday after New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell warned of "tough times ahead" during his annual State of the City address. Mitchell, in great part, blamed the lack of state aid for the budget squeeze New Bedford is facing.

“Our ability to pay the bills has become more constrained,” Mitchell said. “For many years now, the state has been gradually closing off the spigot of unrestricted state aid. This year, we received about the same amount we did in 2008, which is remarkable given how much everything has gone up in price since then.”

Mitchell lamented that the lack of state aid has unfairly placed a burden on property tax payers in the city.

While SouthCoast visits from the governor are less frequent than many would like to see, most agree that she will be ramping up her presence here as we draw closer to election day in November – especially considering Ward 3 City Councilor Shawn Oliver is the running mate of one of her potential Republican challengers, Brian Shortsleeve.

Therefore, we weren't surprised to see a new video posted by the governor's office showing her visiting the Titleist Foot Joy Plant 3 in New Bedford. The video was titled "Getting the Tee at Titleist" and captioned "Team Massachusetts: always on par with the best."

Healey was given the grand tour by Senior VP, Golf Ball Operations at Acushnet Company, Kevin Carando. She rocked a white cleanroom suit over her official governor blue jacket as she helped separate the good golf balls from the rejects.

Could Healey's release of this video be a sign that she's ready to show more love to the SouthCoast?
