Massachusetts Content Creator Aims to Make a Change in Cape Verde
A Massachusetts content creator is using his successful platform to make a difference.
Bridgewater native Anthony Varela is a proud Cape Verdean and he is teaming up with his father to make a difference in the impoverished country.

Who Is Anthony Varela?
Millions of online users flock to “nobodycaresanthony” for a good laugh. He is a New Englander that loves to poke fun at the strange and downright absurd things that we come across online every day.
He’s one of those comics that says what everyone else is thinking, and people can’t get enough of it.
He is not one to get too serious online, but one of his recent posts tugged on the heartstrings of his followers as Varella shared a powerful initiative that he and his father are working on.

Anthony Varela Initiative to Help Cape Verde
Varela’s father, Antonio, grew up in Cape Verde, and he shared his father’s story that kickstarted a movement for the Varela family.
“My dad moved to the US when he was 13 and he goes back multiple times a year to help out over there,” said Varela. “When people come from Cape Verde to the US, he helps them get citizenships, green cards…he’s always given back on his own accord, silently.”
Varela explained how his father will go to Cape Verde, take a walk down the street, and search for anyone in need that he can help.
He has built houses around the island and continues to improve the lives of anyone that will let him.
When Varela’s content creation started to take off, he knew it was time to use his online presence for good and join his father’s goal of changing Cape Verde for the better.
“We were talking on the phone one day and I said to my dad, ‘I bet if you started a fundraiser, I could make a video and get people to donate,’” said Varela.
In about two years, their fundraiser has raised over $100,000.
Varela’s Touching Video About Cape Verde Goes Viral
Varela’s latest video pertaining to the fundraiser showed us a different side of Varela. A much more vulnerable side.
“We managed to get a 13-year-old boy in a wheelchair and (the story) really touched me,” he said. “The mother, who is blind, would give her son a piggyback ride to school and back every day. The school doesn’t even have a bathroom, so he would either have to hold it or get carried down the street where there is a bathroom. Seeing him use the chair for the first time really touched me and I wanted to highlight him.”
Varela’s next goal is to go to Cape Verde with his father and a camera crew in hopes of raising even more awareness on the condition of the developing country.
