A puzzling stop sign has appeared in Acushnet.

You may have seen it. It was installed on Perry Hill Road a short distance from a second stop sign at Main Street.

The new stop sign blinks with red lights, which is great. The confusion comes into play because drivers aren't sure whether they should stop at the first blinking red stop sign and then stop once again at the stop sign at Main Street.

Even Acushnet's Chief of Police, Thomas Carreau, agrees the added stop sign is in an unusual spot.

"That's actually an issue that I brought up with the DPW Director," he said. "I'm trying to get some clarification on that. I'm hoping their plan is to move that new, blinking stop sign to where the original stop sign is. People aren't sure if they're supposed to stop at both stop signs."

Technically, You Should Stop at Both Signs

What should people do until it gets moved?

"That's a good question," Chief Carreau said. "It's a stop sign, so they should slow to a stop, then proceed to the other one. The intention was good because it's a new blinking sign, but we're hoping to get that rectified as soon as possible."

"Right now, it is an active stop sign, so they should be stopping," he said.

Stop Sign Will Be Changed

Within minutes of our conversation with Chief Carreau, he followed up with us to share the news that the DPW will be moving the blinking stop sign to replace the original one on the corner of Main Street. Look for it to be moved ASAP.
