As I drove through Providence last night after work, I was surprised to see someone running where I had never seen a runner before.

Shortly after I crossed into Rhode Island on I-195 last night I saw a guy in the breakdown lane going for a run. At first I thought maybe his car had broken down and he was running to get assistance, but I quickly realized that was not the case.

This young guy was completely dressed for a run. Sneakers, basketball shorts, no shirt and a sweat band across his head. And he was moving along pretty fast too, so he must run all the time.

I just wondered why he came up with a route over the highway and what made him think that was a good idea?

I mean the section he was on was over the water as you head from East Providence to Providence, so maybe this was the shortest route? But it didn't seem like the safest route. He wasn't even running in a direction facing the oncoming traffic like they tell you to on a regular road.

I'm also pretty sure walking or running on the highway is illegal, so all around this seemed like bad news to me.

I would much rather run across a large open field filled with inflatable obstacles and a beer tent here and there! And that's just what you and I can do on October 4th at UMASS Dartmouth with the Insane Inflatable 5K! A nice, safe run and a few drinks to follow sounds much better than trekking along the highway to me!
