Route 6 from Westport to Wareham is NOT on the list this year. It’s relatively easy to navigate through during a snowstorm because of the many traffic signals and stops.

On the list this year?

President Avenue in Fall River westbound at the corner of Highland Avenue in the North Park area of the city. Holy Cow is this a scary street with only an inch of snow on the ground, never mind a foot. It is like going down a ski slope mountain of a hill…in a car. Avoid this street at all costs if you can.

Route 140 north or southbound. When the snow is coming down an inch an hour and the winds are at 30-40 MPH, you can feel your vehicle starting to slide. There’s a flat area between exits 11 and 10 with no trees on either side to block the high winds. Use caution while driving this route.

On Tarklin Hill Road in New Bedford where it meets Ashley Blvd. As you head up towards Kings Highway and the snow is coming down… look out! You could be driving an army tank and still slide with your tires spinning. That is one scary street to be on during a snow storm.

Mary’s Pond Road as you head through Rochester in either direction. Don’t get me wrong; it’s a beautiful scenic country road for a leisurely Sunday drive but not so much when you a trudging through a blizzard.  It’s a straight away in some parts causing white out conditions where you cant see 2 feet in front of you. There are also hills and turns that could have you driving off into the pond if you are not super careful.

And the WORST of the worst roadways to travel on during a snowstorm? In my opinion, Route 495 north or south from Wareham to Worcester is bad, pretty much all of it. High winds causing insane white outs, hills and turns and traffic backups as folks are trying to get off their exits which are frightening to approach on a beautiful summer day, never mind during a nor’easter in February. No thanks. I avoid 495 completely during the snowy winter months.

I hope this list is something you can totally relate to because you too have attempted these roadways during a snowstorm. And maybe this list will help you avoid these roads if you haven’t had the out-of-body-experience of driving on them in the snow yet :)
