Boston Bruins to Retire Zdeno Chara’s No. 33 at TD Garden

The fight. The leadership. The Stanley Cup.

Zdeno Chara gave Boston Bruins fans so much throughout his tenure with the team, wearing the spoked B on his chest from 2006 to 2020 and serving as captain for all 14 seasons.

Now, the Bruins are paying tribute to their former leader and Stanley Cup champion by retiring his number, raising No. 33 up to the TD Garden rafters.

Chara's Number Retirement in Boston

On Thursday, January 15, fans will gather inside the Garden to witness one of the best be honored.

Bruins teammate and fellow 2011 Stanley Cup champion Andrew Ference will host Chara's number retirement ceremony.

The No. 33 will soon join an elite group of legends, sandwiched between Terry O'Reilly and Ray Bourque.

Since retiring from the NHL in 2022, Chara has remained quite active. He laces up his skates every so often for alumni and charity games, but his new love requires far less equipment.

Chara has been hitting the pavement, running multiple marathons and completing Ironman triathlons.

The six-foot-nine former defenseman hasn't gone far over the years – well, with the exception of the miles he's accumulated during his races.

He still lives in the Boston area with his wife and children and was recently hired by the Bruins organization as a Hockey Operations Advisor and Mentor, focusing on player development.

Schedule of Events

• 4:15 p.m. Gold Carpet Entrance at The Hub on Causeway to greet Bruins Alumni
• 5 p.m. All TD Garden doors will open for ticket holders
• 6:10 p.m. All ticket holders are encouraged to be in their seats for the number retirement ceremony
• 6:20 p.m. Ceremony Begins
• 8 p.m. Bruins vs. Kraken game start
