New Bedford has announced a lineup of free family fun centered around a New Year's Eve celebration.

Dec. 31 will be capped off with a fireworks display over New Bedford Harbor, which is scheduled to take place at 8:30 p.m.

You may remember last New Year's Eve featured very heavy fog around the city, which put a damper on the fireworks display. After the fireworks were set off, many wondered why they were lit when the conditions were so terrible. The answer was that the rain date was for New Year's night, which had a forecast of torrential rain. The deposit would not have been returned to Bristol County Savings Bank.

This year, the rest of the evening's activities kick off at 5 p.m. with a mix of both indoor and outdoor things to do including Vinny's Miracle Fish Puppets on the steps of New Bedford Free Public Library. Inside the library will be Ever After Storybook Entertainment Characters. It's a chance for your little ones to sing with beloved characters like Mirabel, Elsa, Winter Elf and Spider-Man.

A spectacle of fire and light called Cirque de Light will take place at Custom House Square. It should be an exciting show with improvisational fire spinners and LED performers.

A variety of fun and memorable shows and booths will be set up in downtown New Bedford.
