New Bedford vs Fall River: The Driver-Friendly Debate

It's the debate that no one is talking about, but everyone knows about.

In the category of the worst city to drive through, it's New Bedford vs. Fall River here on the SouthCoast and the people have spoken. It's been a long time coming, but it's time to set the record straight.

As of December of this year, I will officially have my license for half of my life. For the past 16 years, I've been driving across the SouthCoast, commuting to work, to friend's houses or simply grabbing a bite to eat somewhere.

Besides getting stuck behind a tractor in Westport or a school bus pretty much anywhere, the worst places to drive on the SouthCoast are New Bedford and Fall River.

Change my mind.

However, there can only be one city that triumphs when it comes to being more driver-friendly.

I created a social media poll within two Facebook groups to see how commuters truly felt. One was within a New Bedford group and the other Fall River. The results were very one-sided in each (not surprised).

Out of 60 votes in the Fall River group, 89% of people claim Fall River is better than New Bedford to drive through. Meanwhile, 28 voters in the New Bedford group favored their city with 92% of support over Fall River.

However, I asked my personal friends on my page, and out of 20 people, 15 were adamant about New Bedford being better while five claimed Fall River was the better match.

You have to calculate the ease of one-way streets, the potholes and, of course, the people behind the wheel.

When all is said and done, a majority of people, in my opinion, are terrible everywhere -- always distracted by their phones texting or hogging the narrow streets. There's no consideration, respect or etiquette on the roads anymore.

There's no true winner here as both cities carry the burden of terrible drivers sprinkled throughout. I understand that no one's perfect, but if I had to choose, I'd lean closer to Fall River being the easier of the two to commute around.
