Ready for a feel-good story? This one takes place within the Westport school system and it's just as fun as it is heartwarming.

On Friday, March 1, Westport Elementary and Macomber schools held a cereal box drive that exceeded all expectations. The cereal collected was donated to the Westport Food Pantry. Between the two schools, there were more than 1,300 boxes in total. That's 400 more boxes than last year.

The Donation Breakdown

Macomber (pre-kindergarten and kindergarten) = 285 boxes (this is also the school's second year collecting).

Elementary (1st to 4th grades) = 1,288 boxes.

"The parents are just as competitive as the kids and the teachers," first-grade teacher Robin Morin said. "We had one parent hear that his kid's class was about to lose the top spot and ended up going out and donating an extra 100 boxes to keep the class in first place."

Small Victories, Mighty Breakfast Party

One classroom per grade level will win a cereal party to commemorate the success. The class with the most collected boxes out of anyone will receive a placard of thanks from the pantry, plus a cereal party.
This year, Ms. Capar's class took the top spot.

The sad truth is not that the Westport Food Pantry is always in need of food, but that despite the large haul of cereal, the donations will only keep local families fed for five months.

Before the boxes were shipped to the pantry, the kids lined up the boxes all around the school like dominos and watched them as they fell one by one.

"We enjoy teaching them about the domino effect, push-and-pull science, where every action has a reaction," Morin said. "We wanted to make it fun for the kids, all while helping them to understand the concept of the food pantry. Overall, it was a great turnout."
