Now that's a protein-packed lunch.

For many students, lunchtime is a much-needed break in the school day, a chance to refuel and recharge before tackling afternoon lessons.

While classic favorites like chicken patty sandwiches (or "chicken burgers," as Westport High once called them) have always been a hit, not every menu item appeals to every student.

However, a recent Facebook post from Westport Community Schools highlighted a unique lunch alternative that caught attention for all the right reasons.

"Today’s lunch alternative at WMHS: Boiled egg, cheese sticks, peppers, hummus, tomatoes, pepperoni, a yogurt cup, beef jerky, fruit, and milk! A well-rounded, protein-packed meal to keep you energized!"

This isn't the typical school lunch many might remember.

Instead of processed foods with questionable nutritional value, this meal focuses on fresh, wholesome ingredients packed with protein and essential nutrients.

For those who have been through the school lunch experience, this meal is a refreshing upgrade. Gone are the days of settling for limp pizza slices, stale burgers and bland mystery meat. Instead, students have access to a balanced meal that not only tastes great but also fuels them for the rest of the day.

I'll admit, I'm a little jealous my class didn't have this back in the early 2000s.

While it’s unclear if this is a new initiative or a regular menu option, one thing is certain: this is the kind of school lunch that sets a great example. If Westport is leading the charge in healthier, more satisfying meals, other districts should take notes.
