Westport Is Demolishing Its Playground and Here’s How You Can Get Its Dinosaur
WESTPORT (WBSM) — You might have heard that Westport's Annex Playground on Main Road is being replaced with a brand-new playground.
In the midst of the exciting news about the upcoming construction, residents may also get the chance to take home some of its old equipment – including its beloved green dinosaur.
Westport Recreation announced today on its Facebook page that the demolition will begin on Thursday, June 6.
During this time, the playground will be closed due to land preparation and construction of the new Annex Playground, which could possibly last until July.
Many people have questioned where the playground equipment will end up and whether residents can purchase any of the old equipment and play toys, such as the dinosaur.
Westport Recreation Director Dana Stewart assured that, for the most part, a lot of the removed equipment will be auctioned off by the town.
"A lot of people have been asking about the dinosaur and some of the other riding toys," Stewart told WBSM. "Basically, I brought up what people were inquiring about at the last Board of Selectmen meeting, and it was decided that those pieces could go in the town's auction."
Stewart said there is no date yet for the auction but that it would likely happen sometime in the fall when the town auctions off town-owned property such as older police vehicles and other items.
"When we do the demolition, we're just going to hold some of those pieces back and store them in the highway department building," she said.
As of right now, the new Annex Playground renovation includes five slides of varying heights, multiple swings, and a sensory panel. It'll be a nod to Westport's coastal history with nautical tan, gray and white themes.

The playground will also be handicapped accessible and feature new equipment like an inclusive sea-saw and a whirl spinner.
"We're very excited," Stewart said. "There's just been a little delay due to rain this spring, but we're excited to get it going."
Not only will the community receive this long-overdue playground upgrade, but some lucky residents may also walk away with memorabilia of memories from over the past 30 years.
