Growing up in Westport, I’ve seen just about everything nature has thrown my way: dust devils spinning through cornfields, coyotes helping themselves to cat food on my parents’ back porch, and even cows wandering down Route 6.

One thing I had never witnessed before, however, was multiple bald eagles all at once.

That changed recently over at South Watuppa Pond, where three juvenile bald eagles were spotted having lunch on the frozen water. Unfortunately, an unlucky deer had become trapped in the ice and didn’t survive, turning the scene into an unexpected feeding opportunity for local predators.

Talented Fall River photographer Mark Maxwell is known for capturing stunning wildlife, especially bald eagles. He happened to be in the right place at exactly the right time. The action continued as two of the young eagles were seen battling mid-air over a piece of the carcass while the third stayed below watching.
