NEW BEDFORD — Multiple communities in Bristol County contain mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The Massachusetts Department of Health says mosquito samples taken in New Bedford, Dartmouth, Fall River, and Seekonk have tested positive for West Nile in tests performed over the past week. The samples were taken August 8-13.

Other communities in Bristol County that have tested positive for West Nile Virus-carrying mosquitoes include Mansfield and Easton.

Residents in Bristol County are encouraged to remove any standing water from their property, as such places serve as optimal breeding spots for mosquitoes. People are also advised to avoid being outdoors in the early morning or late evening when mosquitoes are most active. If you are outside during those hours, it is best to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, and wear insect repellent.
