Victim Struck, Killed By Freight Train in Wareham Identified
WAREHAM (WBSM) — The man who was struck and killed by a train in Wareham today has been identified.
In a joint release from Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Walsh, Wareham Police Chief Walter Correia and Wareham Fire Chief John Kelley, the victim was identified as Christopher Cater, 56, of Dorchester.
According to the release, Cater was fishing along the Mass Coastal Railroad tracks this afternoon in the area of Route 6 and Route 28. The area is known in town as “The Narrows,” and it is where the roadway and the train tracks cross the Wareham River.
At about 2:19 p.m., the Mass Coastal trash train began traversing the Narrows Crossing railroad bridge, when Cater was struck by the train and sent into the water below the bridge.
The train conductor and others at the scene jumped in the water to attempt to rescue Cater. He was pulled from the water by first responders and taken to Tobey Hospital, just a few hundred yards away from the bridge, where he was pronounced deceased.
Both the train engineer and the conductor remained on scene and were cooperating with investigators.
According to the release, the train was moving at about 25 miles per hour when it struck Cater, and the engineer was repeatedly sounding the horn to warn him. All crossing barriers were also functioning properly.
