Wareham Firefighters Respond to Nine Calls in Four Hours

WAREHAM — Thursday morning was a busy one for the Wareham Fire Department, as fire crews responded to nine calls in a four-hour span between 8 a.m. and noon.

According to the fire department, 24 career and call firefighters responded to the multitude of incidents, starting with a utility problem at Swifts Beach at 8:12 a.m.

Hour One: Swifts Beach, Route 495 Fuel Spill, Medical Call

8:12 a.m. - Assistant Fire Chief John Kelley responded to a utility problem at Swifts Beach.

8:32 a.m. - Kelley and crews responded to a truck with a ruptured fuel tank that spilled over 50 gallons of fuel onto Route 495 southbound at Route 25. The leak was eventually contained.

8:56 a.m. - Engine 5 responded to a medical emergency call.

Hour Two: Fire Alarms, House Fire With Entrapment

9:15 a.m. - Fire Chief Matt Rowley responded with Squad 2 to two separate fire alarms on Patterson Brook Road.

9:19 a.m. - Kelley responded along with two fire engines and a tower as well as the Onset Fire Chief and an engine responded to a Sandwich Road home for a reported fire with possible entrapment. Crews arrived to find a minor fire, with one person taken to the hospital.

Hours Three and Four: Gas Leak, Car Crash, Smoke, and Medical Call

10:02 a.m. - Several crews responded to a reported gas leak at the Wareham Free Library.

10:26 a.m. - From the library, Engine 5 went straight to the scene of a motor vehicle crash on Glen Charlie Road.

10:58 a.m. - Engine 5 also responded to reports of smoke near Maple Park.

11:51 a.m. - Another fire engine responded to a medical emergency.

Kelley commented, "Department members did a great job handling these calls, and I would like to commend Fire Alarm Operator Mikayla Young for her efficiency in coordinating the responses to these runs."
