Wareham Firefighters Rescue Dog Who Fell Through Ice

Wareham public safety personnel braved sub-zero temperatures Saturday morning to rescue a dog caught in the ice in a pond off Barker Road.

Firefighters responded to the scene at 7:19 on February 4 after receiving a report of the dog who had fallen through the ice. Assistant Chief Mark Rogers arrived to find the dog struggling in the water about 150 feet from the shore.

According to AccuWeather, the temperature at that time in Wareham was -4 degrees, with a wind chill of -16.

Despite the frigid temps, the crew of Engine 1 – Captain Micky Bird and firefighters Chris Barrasso, Alex Estes and Chris Callinan – made their way onto the ice and rescued the dog.

The dog, named Dakota, was brought to a rescue vehicle to warm up, and then was transpired to a local veterinarian for treatment.

Officials say it is estimated the dog was in the water for about 20 minutes.

Wareham Police, Wareham EMS and the Wareham Department of Natural Resources also assisted at the scene.
