Calling all dogs and Wareham residents.

There's a fun contest happening at the new Wareham Dog Park for kids that comes with a prize and bragging rights. A new fire hydrant for the dogs has been dubbed the dog park mascot and it needs a name.

That's where you can help.

The naming contest is open to children in the age groups: 5-8, 9-12, and 13-16.

Judges are from the Department of Natural Resources, the Wareham Fire Department, and the Dog Park Affiliation of Wareham (DPAW). Winners from each age group will receive gift certificates from local businesses, but the overall ‘Best in Show” winner claims the name of the hydrant.

The Wareham dog park is only weeks old as it first opened its gates to the public on April 29. Thanks to the efforts of the Wareham Fire Department for donating the inactive hydrant and the Wareham Animal Control Officer Devin Cloutier for painting the hydrant, the dog park will have a fun mascot for "business" purposes.

"It's a fun way to start the summer for the kids," DPAW community outreach and marketing board member Sally Morrison said. "The dog park took 10 years to finish from the first discussions to putting the ideas into place and finally the funding. Now that it's open we can do fun stuff like this to get the community involved."

The park is open to all, regardless of whether you have a dog.

"It’s very popular with the dogs and a great place to go if you’re feeling lonely, dog or no dog," Morrison said. "A great way to get outside, get some fresh air, and surround yourself with other dog owners. Anybody from anywhere can use the park, as long as rules are obeyed. Great for tourists in the area and summer residents. There are even water bubblers for the dogs and bag disposals and dispensers throughout the park."

DPAW is planning to add shade structures and more play equipment for the dogs.

To enter the contest, email sammorrison@comcast.net and include all the following information:

  • Child’s name
  • Age
  • Suggested Name of hydrant and why the name was chosen
  • Parent/guardian’s name and address.

The contest ends June 3 and the winning name will be announced soon afterward.
