A fire in a Fairhaven home on Thursday afternoon took the lives of two pets, but six animals did survive.

The fire broke out in a home on Christian Street around 3 p.m. Thursday causing serious damage according to The Standard Times.

No one was home at the time, but luckily someone saw smoke coming from the house at 40 Christian St and called 911. The fire department says two engines, an ambulance and a ladder truck were dispatched.

When crews arrived they saw smoke pouring from the windows and they were able to get inside and save six dogs. Sadly one dog and a parrot did not make it out of the blaze.

Fire officials say it appears food was left unattended on the stove and led to the fire, which caused an estimated $50,000 in damage.

The house is currently uninhabitable and the owners are reportedly staying with relatives.
