Two people were killed following separate crashes early today on Route 140 in New Bedford.

Mass. State Police tell WBSM News, one crash happened at 12:15 in the southbound lane and a second crash happened around 2:40am northbound, near the Nash Road overpass.

A 25 year old Acushnet man was killed in the first crash.  State Police say he lost control of his vehicle in the southbound lane and it struck a guardrail.  The man was  ejected from the vehicle and sustained a fatal injury.

One person was killed in the second crash, and four people were injured. According to State Police, the deceased is a 39 year old New Bedford man who left his vehicle to assist the victims of a three-car crash in the northbound lane, when he was struck by an oncoming car. The injured were brought to area hospitals.  Their conditions are unknown.

Part of the highway was closed during the incidents.

The names of the deceased are being withheld till next of kin is notified.  The crashes remain under investigation.
