NEW BEDFORD — Two men are arrested on drug charges in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant in New Bedford.

Police were targeting street-level drug sales in the City's North End on Monday when they witnessed suspicious activity in a car in the parking lot of the McDonald's off of Coggeshall Street at approximately 3:50 p.m. Police arrested the occupant of the car, Jose Petrona, 41, of 56 Beetle Street, Apt. 2, New Bedford, after he was found with a small amount of cocaine. Petrona was charged with possession of cocaine.

Later that night at around 10:21 p.m., police again saw strange behavior in a vehicle in the same lot, and arrested Derek Shorey, 23, of 283 Belair Street, New Bedford, after he was found with more than 300 grams of marijuana and about $500 in cash. Shorey is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, conspiracy to violate drug laws, and distribution of marijuana.
