I am not the most avid skier, but I do enjoy the snow suit and hot cocoa by the fire on a mountain in a cozy lodge. Whether you are a a skier, snow boarder or looking for a great winter getaway, here are a few of my favorite places and why you should love them too!

1) Smuggler's Notch in Vermont: Nestled in Stowe Vermont, not far from the Canadian border, Smuggs Notch sits a top a high peak. It is a three mountain resort and includes activities for all ages.  This is the perfect place to take the family. Activities to enjoy at Smuggs include skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snow mobiling and lots more. It's also near the Von Trapp Family Lodge. Take a family history tour while you're in Stowe Vermont and make a pit stop at the Ben & Jerry's Factory too!

2) Wachusett Mountain: Wachusett is Algonquin for "The Great Hill" and is the highest mountain east of the Connecticut River in Massachusetts. If you love to ski and want to make a day trip or just an overnight stay, Wachusett Mountain is so very close! I've stayed at the Wachusett Village Inn when I have gone.  This was my very first mountain too.  So if you're a novice, take advantage of the bunny slopes (like I did).

3) Bretton Woods and Cranmore Mountain: I group both of these mountains together for one reason; North Conway! With a backdrop of over 700,000 acres of protected White Mountain National Forest and boasting the tallest peak in the East (Mt. Washington 6,288 FT.), visitors to the North Conway NH area have many activities to choose from  including some of the finest skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, family attractions, scenic tours, shopping and leaf peeping in the entire country! Another great family getaway for the winter. So if not everyone in your clan is a snow bunny, there is still lots to do in North Conway.

4) Loon Mountain: Located in Lincoln, NH, this is another great ski resort in New England. They offer ski and snow sports lessons in groups or privately for all ages. So if you're looking to take the family to NH and introduce them to winter sports, Loon is a great place to do so.  Check out the Loon Mountain Club for accommodations and check out their web site for a full mountain report!

5) Sunday River: If you are heading towards Maine, Sunday River is great. From a modest beginning Sunday River has grown to encompass 131 trails and glades, 663 acres, eight interconnected peaks, and a network of 18 lifts.
